Charities

Unfortunately, charities are not immune to fraud. Our own intelligence processes reveal that following a major incident or disaster, organised fraud rings often launch fraud scams impersonating charities with a matter of hours.

The extent of fraud within and against charities is largely unquantified at the current time. However, according to the Fraud Advisory Panel, the annual income of the charitable sector in the UK alone is approximately £38 billion - accounting for approximately 3.4% of GNP. The same Panel estimates that fraud could be costing the sector up to £680 million a year.

Fraud within and against charities can have a significant impact, not only on the charity itself but also beneficiaries, employees and confidence levels in donors themselves.

Frauds can include:

Internal

Embezzlement, nepotism, payroll fraud, theft, purchasing fraud, expenses fraud, data theft (donors, trustees, employees, beneficiaries)

External

Purchasing fraud, data theft, fraudulent grant applications, phishing, impersonation frauds (including charity collectors), charity take-over frauds, terrorist financing

As part of our social commitment, we will provide free advice and a fraud health-check to charities concerned by fraud issues. If you area registered charity interested in this service, please use the 'Contact Us' page.
